U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has selected Elon Musk to lead a newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in his upcoming administration.
Trump also announced that biotech investor Vivek Ramaswamy will join Musk in working on the initiative to dismantle bureaucracy. Trump stated that the pair will provide external guidance to the White House on enacting large-scale structural reform.
In other key appointments, Trump named Fox News host and combat veteran Pete Hegseth as his Defense Secretary and former Texas congressman and federal prosecutor John Ratcliffe as CIA Director.
Elon Musk, a major Trump campaign donor, has been officially appointed to lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for the incoming administration. Joining him on the initiative is Vivek Ramaswamy, a former GOP presidential candidate who ran against Trump earlier this year.
In his Tuesday night announcement, Trump stated that DOGE aims to “dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies. While it’s not a formal government department an official designation that would require congressional approval the initiative will see Musk and Ramaswamy collaborate with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget to address “massive waste and fraud” in the government’s $6.5 trillion annual spending.
Trump compared the initiative to the historic Manhattan Project, calling for completion by July 4, 2026, as a tribute to America’s 250th Independence Day anniversary. “A smaller Government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America,” he remarked.
In a statement from Trump’s campaign, Musk said, “This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people.” He later posted on his platform, X: Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to Bureaucracy.
Ramaswamy, reposting Trump’s announcement on social media with the phrase “we will not go gently,” also confirmed he is withdrawing from consideration for Ohio’s Senate seat, soon to be vacated by Vice-President-elect JD Vance. During his own presidential bid, Ramaswamy had pledged to reduce the federal workforce by 75% and eliminate agencies like the Department of Education, the FBI, and the ATF.
DOGE’s name appears to playfully reference the popular cryptocurrency Dogecoin, which originally started as a parody.
